When to use matching and weighting or regression in instrumental variable estimation? Evidence from college proximity and returns to college

Abstract Standard two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression remains dominant in instrumental variables estimation of causal effects even though the literature has shown that 2SLS may be inconsistent when are heterogenous and instrument is only valid conditioning on covariates. To show this not merely a hypothetical threat, paper re-estimates returns to college using proximity as an based data from Card (Aspects labour market behavior: essays honour John Vanderkamp, University Toronto Press, Toronto, 1995). The results yields systematically larger estimates than more flexible estimators propensity score. In full sample, differences amount about 50 100%. This due implicit conditional-variance weighting performed by 2SLS. Moreover, line with theoretical prediction Sloczynski (When should we (not) interpret linear IV estimands LATE? IZA discussion papers 14349, Institute Labor Economics (IZA), 2021), findings suggest impact groups roughly same size. Thus, it advised use caution score instead different size covariates predictive instrument.
